Webinar on the Protection Principles in the Sphere Handbook
Webinar on the Protection Principles in the Sphere Handbook
Access International is pleased to invite you to a webinar on the Protection Principles in the Sphere Handbook, tailored specifically for Arabic-speaking humanitarian workers. This webinar is part of the Sphere Ambassadors Program, which aims to build a network of trained professionals and raise awareness of the Sphere Handbook across the Arab region, particularly in countries affected by humanitarian crises. The program enhances the skills of humanitarian workers by deepening their knowledge of the Sphere Handbook, and through its activities, we aim to promote Sphere standards to deliver quality assistance and practices that ensure accountability, dignity, and address the needs of affected populations.
The Sphere Handbook is one of the most essential resources in humanitarian work, comprising a set of global standards focused on quality and accountability in humanitarian response. It provides a framework to deliver aid in ways that uphold the dignity and safety of those affected by crises and disasters. Covering technical aspects and core standards across water and sanitation, food security and nutrition, shelter, and health, the handbook also strengthens humanitarian organizations' commitment to the highest levels of transparency and accountability toward affected communities.
During the webinar, we will explore the four Protection Principles outlined in the Sphere Handbook. These principles lay the foundation for humanitarian assistance that protects individuals' rights and meets their needs without discrimination. They include maintaining individuals' dignity, empowering them to claim their rights, and guiding humanitarian workers to create a safe and fair environment for those affected.

His journey began with the Syrian Red Crescent in 2011, where he volunteered in relief and first aid, as well as managing warehouses, logistics, and supply chains. Over the years, Rabih moved between various sectors of humanitarian work, allowing him to participate in numerous field responses, including shelter, evacuation, relief, management of human remains, and restoring family links.
In 2020, Rabih became a listed trainer with Sphere, organizing and participating in numerous training sessions for staff in international and local organizations. These trainings have been delivered to field teams, unit and section coordinators, and senior management of organizations.
• Ammar Al Jaour: An experienced trainer in disaster and crisis management. He currently works as the Disaster Management Coordinator at Terre des Hommes – Italy and lectures in the Disaster and Crisis Management Diploma program at the Syrian International Academy. He holds a degree in Economics from the University of Damascus.
Ammar began his training career with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, where he trained volunteers on the Sphere Handbook (2011 edition) and continued to provide specialized training covering the entire handbook, focusing on protection and disaster management. He also participated in the review of the Sphere Handbook 2018.
In his training sessions, Ammar emphasizes the importance of protection in emergencies and disasters. He is also a Trainer of Trainers in two other areas of the Humanitarian Standards Partnership: the Core Humanitarian Standard on Quality and Accountability and the INEE Minimum Standards for Education in Emergencies.
With their deep experience in the humanitarian field and as Sphere Handbook trainers, the trainers will guide us through a knowledge journey that highlights the principles of protection and the best ways to apply them in diverse scenarios, to enhance knowledge of the most important humanitarian standards.
